Some context: Text Doctors are a collection of Tumblr-based RP blogs featuring plague doctors made out of ASCII symbols with their own unique lore, they’re mostly variants of the first one to don the title, Doctor Screech, a eldritch monster who hails from the abyss and landed in a world of violet occupied by walking fungal-infected-corpses and other such nasties. In this mod, Screech has trapped Boyfriend in a time loop of death and pain.

How to draw a text doctor: Hyper’s Method

Okay, so @the-arcade-doctor wanted me to make an instructions sheet, but I’m shit at explaining so unless I make a full video on this, here are my biggest tips for text doctors!

1. Sketch your character as if it will be a normal drawing beforehand. Proportions and shapes will ALWAYS be easier to do if you’re not thinking in ascii. Draw your character and then assemble the ascii over your sketch, as if you’re drawing lineart.

2. Hands can be stylized in SO many ways. Text doctors don’t need to have realistic hands, you can do just about anything. Circles with underscore fingers work just as well as meticulously drawn fingers, and in some cases they are actually uh. Significantly cooler looking imo.

3. Your lines shouldn’t always connect. It’s a text doctor, them looking floaty and overlap-y adds to the look SO MUCH

4. Pick one color and stick with different shades of it. Never move that color slider. Take Hijinks for example: he uses #FE0540 as his ascii color, and all the colors used are darker versions of that color. Additionally, limit yourself to only a few shades. (This is a general tip, not a rule. Do what you want and I’m sure it will look badass)

5. Don’t let different segments have the same shade if you can help it. This is just, generally a good character design tip when using a limited color pallet. Of course, this isn’t a sure rule, and it just takes some intuition.

6. You *can* use different colors for the ascii, but save it for your emphasis points. For example, Cleaver’s ( @the-text-butcher )eyes are black lines, unlike her usual pink. Again, this takes some intuition. Like, JOTA is mostly neon green and a darker green for parts of the body, so I reserve black for the claws and wing.

7. It shouldn’t look perfect. This character is supposed to look like it’s made out of text, so messy curves and disconnected lines and overlapping corners are so cool!! Adding in very identifiable symbols ( =+#%^~;!?[ etc) is a good way to get this look as well.
